| Abstract |
Methodology to reclaim carbon fiber from the simple carbon composites used in first generation composite aircraft has been known for a decade. With the advent of the Boeing 787, new, more advanced composites have entered the production stage and require a new approach to reclamation. These modern composites no longer consist of monolithic fiber-reinforced materials, but are well designed multi-layers of composite and other materials, mainly for toughening purposes. Adherent Technologies, Inc. has designed a process to reclaim carbon fibers from these new materials, incorporating both a wet chemical and a low temperature pyrolysis process. This combination produces high quality carbon fiber while avoiding the oxidation inducing high temperature regime needed for single step pyrolysis. |
